Hand Painted Warp Scarf

To my delight, I’ve started my first project on Julia, the little red loom from Glimakra, a hand painted warp rayon scarf, blues and greens with black stripes. I played around with a twill but the black weft became too dominating and took away from the look of the painted warp so I’m weaving the entire scarf in a simple tabby. The light weft is temporary…scrap woven to even the warp which will be discarded and the exposed warp will become the scarf fringe. You’ll notice the shuttle, it is a Schacht Spindle Company end shuttle. I LOVE IT! It’s small and advances evenly making it easy to maintain tension. And, I really like the overhead beater on the Julia. It can be moved forward and back (no screws or bolts anchoring it to the loom) which allows you to weave more area before advancing the warp. Nice!

Whites Scarf

This is the project I started to demonstrate weaving to the kids at church studying the woven basket baby Moses was placed in. I used seven colors of white, repeated several times. The largest yarn is cotton, the second largest is bamboo, the third is a thick and thin cotton mix with brown slubs and the others are rayon. I used a “white linen” colored rayon for the weft. It looks prettier without the camera flash but see what you think. (I’m still using the old camera. Hopefully, I can play with the new one this weekend when work doesn’t get in the way.)

Finishing Peach & White Scarf. You can see it still on the loom. On the MasterWeaver III the woven fabric goes down the front and up the back. You can see the finished starting end of the scarf coming up over and down the front. There are still color change ends showing. I wove the new colors in and left tails that will be cut off once the scarf has been fulled.

I plan to add this scarf and the violet beaded scarf to my Etsy site as soon as the Peach & White is fulled and dried.

This time using the same set-up as the purple and white scarf, I’ve started another scarf. This time with softer peach and white. Notice in the one photo that I started off with yellow scrap yarn which will later form some of the tassels. (It looks upside down because you’re looking at the finished weaving as it moves up the back of the loom.)

In the other photo, notice the interesting nubby warp, another experiment. I like the textured yarn but it all but disappeared once the weft was woven in. I’m new at weaving and I’m learnin’.

I decided as blogged earlier, that all my scarves were beginning to look alike. Here is something different. You’ll notice the finished alpaca/mohair/wool throw drying after being fulled behind the purple and white wool scarf.

The warp is 6 strands of purple alternated with six strands of white. The weft is the same 6 & 6. The set-up for the MasterWeaver III is 123567531765 across the cylinder and rotate discs in sequence: 123567.

ALERT: I neglected to use scrap yarn at the beginning of the weaving; the weaving had a tighter weave and was flatened and wider at the beginning because of this. Learn by my mistake. Always weave a few weft rows with scrap yarn before begining your weaving so the the draw-in will settle in and the finished product will be more consistent.

Another Beaded Scarf

Lee is home! My husband’s two week ordeal in the hospital is over. After having every orafice probed and every body fluid cultured, the outcome … it was not a stroke, not a heart attack, not a bacterial infection, they eliminated for days … the seven doctors from seven disciplines could come up with no explanation other than a really nasty “bug”, a virus. Whatever it was, I don’t want it. He’s home, glad to be home, tired but “OK”. Thank God for his mercy.

The warp is a mix of that Wool/Soy blend that had been on sale at Michael’s for $1.50 a skein. I used the beaded yarn with a five inch border of unbeaded yarn. (All my scarves are beginning to look alike. I need to mix it up my next project.) I set up the warp at Fiber Space, and wove at the hospital. The beads all but disappeared in the multi-colored warp. The beads were opaque. In future, I would use opaque beads only against a single colored background. The glintening beads I used on the Koala Scarf worked well, even on the multicolored scarf as they captured and reflected the light.

Halloween Glow in the Dark Scarf

Using Bernat “Glow in the Dark” Acrylic(70%)/Polyester(30%) I wove a long, narrow scarf which could be used as a scarf or belt. Difficult to photograph but if it is saturated with day light, it does glow. What fun. While this scarf is created completely with this yarn, in future I plan to weave with but a bit of it for the fun of it after dark. Sadly, the colors are in the range I reserve mostly for children’s items.
